How To Improve Race Relations

By Virginia King

It is almost impossible to discuss race with evoking negative emotions. This storm has led to broken relationships and inability to work in some circumstances. Violence and conflicts in different parts of the world have also been attributed to poor race relations. This leaves every individual and organization with the responsibility of building stronger bridges between different races. Here are ways to boost these relationships.

Engage people in conversations on how races can co-exist without violence. Such conversations can decently happen in all corners of the world and create change. When people who are offended voice their concerns, offenders will better understand the situation. It gives them a sober moment to reflect on their actions and words in order to change. The aim of conversations is to raise awareness and forestall future offensive remarks or actions.

Jokes or actions that mock or make fun of other races should not be entertained. This includes stereotypes that are negative and only fuel conflicts between races. People must be made aware of the fact that words and actions that put other people down will not be tolerated. Do not laugh at such remarks or jokes. The person pushing the jokes will pick cue from you and stop the offensive approach.

You need to be introspective as an individual. Other people must also be urged to think before uttering words and change the language or approach when it feels oppressive. Share stories of disasters and tragedies that have resulted from racism and find ways to combat the vice. It creates awareness of the damage that small and seemingly innocent actions can cause.

Criticize the things you interact with by reading, viewing or listening to. Abandon shows that are racist or offensive. If a candidate or leader is racist in his or her principles, drop your support. Activities that are organized by racist persons or people with such an agenda should be avoided. The message that all races must co-exist must be sent clearly and loudly.

Work in environments where the community is made of diverse races. This diversity should spread from the lowest working cadre to the highest level of executives. As management or business owners, you will be sending a clear signal that you have no preference. It also makes each person to realize that he or she has an equal chance to work without prejudice.

Persons who promote racism must be punished severely. The policy on racism must be included in company regulations and policies. Each worker and partner must be made aware that your organization does not entertain racism. Punishment should be meted on those caught perpetuating the vice. There is also need to protect majority of the people from reverse discrimination from minority. Racism will cease to be an issue if everyone is treated as an equal.

Each situation should be treated individually. Be candid in your discussions about racism and handle issues when they are still fresh on the minds of people. The campaign to improve relationships between races must be spearheaded by management. Seek to be genuine and candid in your campaign and you will enjoy the fruits.
