Options On How To Adopt Sustainable Digital Printing

By Joshua Foster

Environmental conservation in business is a subject that has to be addressed by all industries including the printing industry. It is increasingly becoming clear that businesses that are not environmental conscious may lose out to their competitors that are in the near future. There are many ways in which individual firms can adopt sustainable digital printing without necessarily compromising on the quality of their work. We will look at some of the options available.

Choosing the right type of ink is one of the major steps that can be undertaken. Traditional inks contain volatile organic compounds, VOCs, since they are derived from petroleum. In the presence of nitrogen and sunlight, these compounds react to form smog. Due to this effect, newer, vegetable-based inks that do not contain the VOCs are now available in the market.

Petroleum based inks are also known to have a significantly high amount of heavy metals. Examples include cadmium, nickel, chromium, mercury and selenium among others. These metals are known contaminants of soil and water when released through effluents. This is likely to occur if they are released in large quantities or there is prolonged use. Most vegetable based inks have very little of these metals if at all.

There are two types of paper that can be used by printing firms: virgin paper and recycled paper. The latter is derived from waste paper and should be the natural choice for a person seeking to better the environment. Apart from being cheaper, it reduces the need to cut down more trees. Other advantages include the fact that it needs less water to process and that less effluent is produced when it is used.

Recycling and reusing raw materials can be extended to involve other inputs other than paper. Water, a key component in the process of printing, is among the easiest to reuse. Studies have indicated that more than two thirds of the water being used in the first cycle can be reused in the second cycle. Ink and aluminum plates can also be reused in subsequent cycles.

Efficiency in the use of power is an aspect that has to be closely monitored to ensure that wastage is put at the minimum. Strive to reduce your use of hydropower and petroleum based fuels and increase utilization of wind, solar and other renewable sources of energy. One of the decisions that you may need to make is to get rid of old, inefficient equipment and replace it with that which has higher output for every product produced.

The printing of fabrics is another area that has been under pressure to develop sustainable solutions. The pre-treatment process is one area in which changes have been made. Traditionally, the chemicals used for the process have included urea. When urea is released into the environment, it is broken down to yield carbon-dioxide as a byproduct which is one of the major greenhouse gases. A special type of form that has no urea has been formed and is now being used.

Using sustainable solutions in printing goes a long way into preserving our natural resources. To the individual firm, it is a way to participate in worthy cause and more importantly, it greatly helps in lowering operational costs. The reduced operational costs will be passed on to the consumer in the form of more affordable products. In the end, it is a win-win situation for everyone.
