Adventures In Collective Empowerment And Self-Determination

By Kevin Parker

When it comes to having the self-determination to get things done, people often need a great deal of strength. In some cases, adventures in collective empowerment can be beneficial in teaching people new and different skills which can empower and enlighten individuals in this area. For, it is also the process of gaining strength and becoming more confident while taking control of life and learning how to claim personal rights and space.

In some cases, empowerment can be used as a practical approach in interventions related to social work. While it can also be used as a tool in the area of education. For, without it, individuals would have a hard time developing, learning and growing in knowledge and information.

One of the most common definitions suggest that it is an ongoing process which is intentional and centered in the local community which involves group participation, critical reflection and caring. Whereas, the term also refers to the process which enables groups and individuals to access collective power, influence, authority and to employ strength when engaging with others, society at large or institutions.

In no way is empowering someone giving the individual power. For, power already exist within the wealth of knowledge each individual. Rather, it is the letting the power out into the world while teaching people to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to overcome obstacles and reach goals. After which, most often these individuals become stronger and better able to handle a number of different tasks whether at home, school or work.

Also being defined as being part of the process of obtaining opportunities for marginalized individuals, groups and minorities, it has the power to promote good in a number of different areas. As a result, individuals working towards equality and unity are actively using empowerment to empower others to make a change towards acceptance and tolerance from one of bigotry, hatred and homophobia.

Collective empowerment is different from individual forms that it generally involves two or more people whom are working together for the common good. For example, groups such as LGBTQ+ pride committees who work all year, often on a volunteer basis to plan and promote a pride parade open to all in the LGBTQ+ community, family, friends and allies. After which, there are often new supporters whom wish to help promote equality whether in a city, state, country or around the globe.

While the phrase empower a female may sound sexist as doing so could dismiss men, truth is all genders, including transgendered individuals need to be empowered equally. In most cases, it occurs through a global perspective of life in which all are equal, events, standards and improvement of conditions.

Empowerment can also be used to help impoverished individuals learn how to grow gardens, or apply for food banks and food stamps. Whereas, it can also be used in an individual and collective manner to create better neighborhoods through building playgrounds and organizing cleaning projects. While the goal may be a noble one, it should be noted that not all want to be the change others want to experience in the world.
