They should be capable of offering suggestions that are relevant in the context of the story. For instance, looking at the goals of a book, they might give suggestions about how the character may be developed, style that should be used and the language that would effectively pass the message across. When going through the script, they should be able to identify the various mistakes made as well as changes that should be made and clearly outline them. This is important because the writer will be able to view them and make all the relevant changes and not give them such a hard time.

They should also solve problems and not add to them. Giving solutions to problems identified is part of their job. They have to offer advice as well as give suggestions as to what needs to be done so that a way forward is clearly mapped out and the issue at hand gets to be addressed.

They should also possess creativity. They are required to view things according to the expert perspective in that they enter their world and see things as the writer does. This way, the publishing supervisor will be able to come up with new creative concepts that can be incorporated into the story to add that little spark to the story. They should also have the capabilities of putting the right words together to help add spice to the story.

In addition, they need to also have respect for the work of the writer. Recognizing that the author has total control over the entire project in the first step into creating mutual respect is important. The author should be the one telling the story and is the only one with the power of making any changes to the content.

Everyone needs some guidance at some point of their life and it usually does not matter how experienced you might be. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the editor to give the writer proper instructions of what needs to be done. They should also provide market analysis and know what the readers want.

Writing is a two way thing and it requires equal efforts from both parties that is the publishing supervisor and the author. Therefore, the writer should also try to create an atmosphere where they can both work together to produce quality results. They ought to be open minded and accept corrections.
