Choosing A Childrens Book For Boys

By Etta Bowen

Though not a trait everyone is naturally endowed with, a love of reading can be quite advantageous. According to research, exposing a child to literature early in life, and on a frequent basis, can greatly improve many of their mental skills as they grow. Typically, girls tend to gravitate to this activity easily, though males can be encouraged by finding just the right childrens book for boys.

On average, males show less interest in reading as they are prone to inattention and the need to be active, while females are better at controlling impulses and concentrating. This is a broad generalization, however, as extenuating circumstances create both reluctant and enthusiastic readers in each gender. Discovering why one has little to no interest in this activity is the first step to encouraging them to change.

Several things such as low attention issues, dyslexia or concept comprehension issues and other medical conditions can contribute to a child's lack of interest in reading. However, the most frequently stated reason given by the majority of youth is that they cannot find topics that keep their focus, thereby making the activity boring. Teachers and librarians often compile lists of titles that broach a wide range of subjects to help even the most apathetic individual find something they might enjoy.

There are a multitude of topics that could be of great interest to males of all ages. Some are enraptured by grounded subject matter such as timeless classics, mythology, epic adventures, history, sports and science, while others need their imagination sparked through stories involving things like aliens, worlds and creatures of fantasy, Manga scenarios, graphic novels, supernatural beings, vehicles or dinosaurs. There is so much from which to choose.

Quite often, adults do not realize how serious a child's lack of interest in reading is or how important it is to try and encourage them to read even small articles in newspapers and magazines. Literary acuity is a key part of success in school as it leads to better skills in creative and critical thinking as well as those in comprehension, communication and writing. These children also tend to have above average vocabularies and a heightened imagination.

There are a number of ways parents, teachers or mentors may ignite the spark and encourage a young person to take an interest in reading. For many children, listening to someone read aloud, and discussing the story, is the best way to start. This should be done often and with much enthusiasm.

Varying the subject matter to find what interests each child is very effective. When their particular niche is discovered, try sharing more titles on the same topic. Allow them to peruse the bookshelves in the library to experience many more adventures and tales of excitement.

Throughout an individual's lifetime, the ability to comprehend the written word will prove to be a very valuable skill. It allows a person the opportunity to learn many new things, expand what they already know, take an exciting adventure, escape to a world of fantasy, explore the universe, visit different time periods or just relax a while. The mind is unleashed when this gift is opened.
