Grammar And Citation

By Franklin Skribbit

One of the most challenging tasks for students of any discipline is to write a term paper or other important form of paper when it is assigned with a seemingly far off due date. Some may think this an odd statement, but the truth is that there are many people who do their best work when they know they have a deadline to beat and are under the gun to get it done.

One reason why this ease with deadlines and difficulty with long term projects might be is because a paper or term paper that is due in a relatively short amount of time gives the student a structure to work from by which they can organize their efforts and produce a quality paper. While on the other hand, when people in general and students in specific are given tasks that they can postpone they will tend to do so for various reasons, some of which reasons are very legitimate and can be seen as properly prioritizing time.

Competent note taking relies heavily on your ability to accurately and clearly record the information. Take time to learn to type faster and know the keyboard shortcuts for commonly used things like bold and underline. If you prefer to hand write your notes work on your penmanship. Hastily scribbled and hardly legible notes are quite simply a waste of time.

Finally, whether you're using a laptop or pen and paper, you want to make sure that you are keeping your notes well organized. Keep all of your files stored digitally by class and make sure each entry is dated to make finding the information easier. If you hand write your notes, have a binder for each class and again, store your notes in order by date.

Effective note taking requires some preparation. If you haven't done the homework or the previous night's reading assignment, understanding your professor becomes much harder. Familiarize yourself with the material and arrive a few minutes early to class so that you can review the material again before class begins. Also, remove or turn off distractions like your phone and the internet so that you can focus on what is being taught.

First, we'll discuss commas and apostrophes. Commas are the bane of Grammar Nazis everywhere. Most people use them too little or too much and quite frequently in the wrong places altogether. The only way to fix this is to study a reliable resource or ask someone who knows and then truly internalize the rules for comma usage. Now to apostrophes; never use an apostrophe to indicate a plural. Ever. Apostrophes are used to denote a contraction, or the combination of two words where some letters are removed like 'they're' for 'they are', and to denote possession as in, 'that is Mary's book.' Additionally, remember that possessive pronouns never take the apostrophe. (his, hers, theirs, yours, ours, and its)

By breaking up the paper with an outline containing specific sections, a student can write out a schedule as to when they will write each section or broken down piece of the paper. For example, a page or so may be dedicated to a specific point that can be written one week with another part of the paper written the next week.

These tips can help students of business in National City and other students elsewhere to complete their term papers on schedule. Doing so will allow these students to have more time to work on their papers, get better quality from their research and writing, and be able to have less stress come the end of the semester due to a postponed term paper.
