Mind Blowing Novels By African American Authors

It is impossible to ignore the contribution African Americans have made to the literary scene. They are the authors behind some of the most amazing titles. Their works cover a range of themes including racism, economic empowerment, relationships, immigration, etc. As Maya Angelou once said that there is no greater agony than bearing an untold story, here are amazing novels by African American authors that everyone should read.

A Brief History of Seven Killings is penned by James Marlon. He has made his mark as a great story teller who is very attentive to details and can create some of the most vivid characters. It is a story of an unstable Jamaica as told through some of their famous sons. The central theme is the inability of a character to divorce self from a society and the inevitability of fate. This fate is usually delivered by the society one is living in.

The writer of The Color Purple is a recipient of National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize. Alice Walker chooses the theme of women and their social contribution to culture. She picks Broadway shows to highlight the contribution women make to the culture of this society. The movie that was developed from this novel went on to be nominated for Academy Award.

Terry Macmillan had already established herself as an award winning story teller with mastery of characterization when she wrote Getting to Happy. It was a continuation of Waiting to Exhale which had already received international acclaim. She sticks with her main characters namely Savannah, Bernadine, Gloria and Robin. She portrays them as vivid, smart mouthed and sassy characters. In their daily endeavors they encounter situations that force them to chase personal happiness that must come from within.

Bloodchild and Other Stories is an anthology by the famed Octavia Butler. She is the same author behind Kindred. The author has received both Hugo and Nebula awards in the past making her a recognized story teller of the science fiction class. This is an opportunity to oscillate between the earth and distant stars.

The Fifth Season is an exciting narrative about a world that has gotten used to catastrophe. The opening scene features a sun whose view is blocked by ash from a rift on earth. You will also encounter the struggle of a man who has lost a daughter in the process and whose son has been killed. In the bigger plan, it is the powers that control the earth that are now being used as weapons. This story is a recipient of Hugo Award.

Nnedi Okorafor is the brain behind Binti, a narrative of sacrifice by the first recipient of a much coveted scholarship to Oomza University. She has to transverse the universe and encounter people with little regard for her culture. As much as this journey is torturous, she has to emerge victorious because she needs the knowledge at the university. The journey will leave her with scars.

Numerous African American story tellers have graced the literary scene. Many more like Colson whitehead, Jesmyn Ward and Hannaham James continue to make their contributions. As the stories and themes widen, the world continues to enjoy the work of these distinguished story tellers.
